What is cold capping?

What makes cold CAPPING SUCCESSFUL?

Cold capping has proven to be a successful method for patients undergoing chemotherapy due to its ability to help minimize hair loss. By cooling the scalp, cold caps constrict the blood vessels, reducing the amount of chemotherapy drugs that reach the hair follicles. This process helps to preserve the hair and can significantly reduce the emotional and psychological impact of hair loss during cancer treatment. Additionally, for many patients, maintaining a sense of normalcy and privacy regarding their illness is vital, and cold capping enables them to keep their hair and retain a level of control over their appearance. With advancements in technology and increased awareness of cold capping, more and more cancer patients are able to benefit from this innovative and impactful method during their chemotherapy treatments.

Do I have to cut my hair?

Hair care

It is recommended that you have a trim to remove any split ends (1-2 inches max) before your first session of cold capping. This helps to prevent any knots from forming in the future. Preventing this helps your hair to not tangle during your everyday activities, such as brushing hair, putting on clothes, and sleeping. This is important because it helps accommodate for any weakened hair follicles. There is no need to have a drastic haircut!

How long should I wait before coloring my hair?

It is recommended to wait 6 months after the last treatment, as this is generally how long it can take for your hair follicles to heal. An alternative to this would be waiting 3 months and try a natural or organic hair dye with no added ammonia or peroxide added. While this can be done, it is important to do a patch test first to be sure of how your hair will react, since treatment can make your skin and hair more sensitive than before, even if you are using the same dye that you have used before.

Should my hair be dampened before using a cold cap?

You will not need to dampen your hair for this cold capping process. While other providers may do this, Penguin Cold Caps are made to fit snuggly to your head, making producing the cold temperature much more efficient than other providers. Additionally, many studies have concluded that there is “not enough convincing evidence found to conclude whether dampening hair prior to scalp cooling contributes to better prevention of CIA or Chemo Induced Alopecia.”

Dampening your hair can also lead to far colder temperatures than necessary, creating discomfort and difficulty during this process.

How much dry ice is needed for cold capping?

Depending on availability and time of your treatment, you can purchase dry ice the night before or day of your cold capping session. It is recommended to purchase 45-50 lbs. (20kg) on the day of your treatment, or 60 lbs (27kg) the day before treatment. We have found that dry ice pellets, placed in zip lock bags are easier to work with to thoroughly cool all parts of the caps.
